Barsky Pin
Pin #1 was designed by Dr. Sanford Barsky in 1999, while a pathologist and cancer researcher at the UCLA Medical Center in Los Angeles. Dr. Barsky is now the Chairman of the Department of Pathology at Ohio State University. Dr. Barsky has successfully implanted inflammatory breast cancer into a mouse, which demonstrates the same phenotype as human ibc. This was reported in the October 15, 1999 issue of Cancer Research. Using this xenograft of human inflammatory breast cancer, his research continues and he has found a number of exciting and unique biological characteristics of inflammatory breast cancer.
The pin Dr. Barsky designed, using the pink breast cancer pin as its basis, depicts a cross section of an endothelial-cell-formed lymphovascular space, with six epithelial cells forming a tumor embolus in that space. The formation of tumor emboli of as many as hundreds of epithelial tumor cells is characteristic of inflammatory breast cancer.
